I needed an engaging way to help students practice adding two-digit coin amounts during our money unit. After searching Pinterest, I came up with my own twist on an idea I had seen done several different ways. Students were given a menu board that displayed different flavors of cupcakes, icing, and toppings. Each ingredient was assigned a price. Students were given the freedom to choose how they wanted to build their cupcakes. Then, they had to total the cost and justify their answers with their partners. Students were so excited to visit the "cupcake store." I was so excited to apply this concept to a real-life scenario! I've pictured some student examples with this post.
